About Lake Natron

Lake Natron is one of the most otherworldly landscapes in Tanzania. This shallow, salt-encrusted lake lies in the northern Rift Valley, beneath the shadow of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai "Mountain of God" and East Africa's only active volcano.

The lake's distinctive red and pink coloration comes from salt-loving microorganisms that thrive in its extremely alkaline waters (pH as high as 10.5). This harsh environment supports few species, but it's the primary breeding ground for 2.5 million Lesser Flamingos who nest here.

Lake Natron is remote and requires a spirit of adventure to visit. The landscape is harsh but hauntingly beautiful - salt flats, volcanic ash plains, hot springs, and dramatic escarpments. It's a photographer's dream and a naturalist's wonder.

Activities include trekking to waterfalls fed by the escarpment, visiting Maasai villages, and for the adventurous, night climbs of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. The area offers a unique combination of geology, ornithology, and cultural experiences found nowhere else.

Best Time to Visit

Lake Natron's remote location and extreme conditions make timing important for your visit.

June to October (Dry Season): Most accessible with better road conditions. Hot and dry (temperatures can exceed 40°C). Flamingo breeding typically occurs during this period. Clearer skies for photography and volcano trekking.

November to May (Wet Season): Some roads become impassable, requiring 4x4 vehicles. The lake expands and colors intensify. Fewer tourists mean a more pristine experience. March to June sees peak flamingo chick hatching.
