About Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi is a seasonal shallow endorheic salt lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley. But what makes it truly special is that it's the cultural home of the Hadzabe tribe, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer communities in Africa.

The Hadzabe (or Hadza) people have lived in central Tanzania for thousands of years, maintaining their ancient lifestyle. With a population of fewer than 1,000, they hunt with handmade bows and arrows, gather wild fruits and honey, and speak a unique click language.

Also living around Lake Eyasi are the Datoga people, traditionally pastoralists and skilled metalworkers. Visitors can observe traditional blacksmithing techniques passed down through generations, creating brass jewelry and tools.

A visit to Lake Eyasi offers a rare window into ancient human lifestyles. It's an opportunity to learn about sustainable living, traditional medicine, and cultural practices that have remained largely unchanged for millennia. This is cultural tourism at its most authentic and respectful.
