About Mafia Island
Mafia Island is Tanzania's best-kept marine secret. Part of the Mafia Archipelago and home to the Mafia Island Marine Park, this serene island offers some of the Indian Ocean's most pristine coral reefs and the opportunity to swim with whale sharks.
Unlike its more famous neighbors, Mafia remains blissfully undeveloped. The island retains its natural charm with coconut palms, mangrove forests, traditional fishing villages, and unspoiled beaches. Tourism here is low-key, eco-conscious, and deeply connected to marine conservation.
Mafia Island Marine Park protects over 400 square kilometers of reefs, mangroves, and sea grass beds. The park is a biodiversity hotspot with over 400 species of fish and five species of sea turtles. From October to March, whale sharks visit Mafia's waters to feed on plankton blooms.

Best Time to Visit
Mafia Island is beautiful year-round, but the best time depends on your priorities.
October to March (Whale Shark Season): This is THE time to visit if you want to swim with whale sharks. Peak season is December to February. Calm seas and excellent visibility. Hot and sunny weather.
June to September (Dry Season): Good diving and snorkeling with clear visibility. No whale sharks but still excellent marine life. Cooler temperatures and occasional winds. Lower tourist numbers.
April to May (Rainy Season): Some lodges close. Reduced visibility but still diveable. Very quiet and peaceful. Best prices. Lush vegetation and dramatic skies.
