About Mount Meru
Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest peak at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) and Africa's fifth-highest. Located in Arusha National Park, just 70 kilometers from Kilimanjaro, Meru offers a spectacular yet less-crowded alternative to its famous neighbor.
This active volcano last erupted in 1910, leaving a dramatic horseshoe-shaped crater with a subsidiary peak called the Ash Cone. The climb is technically easier than Kilimanjaro but still challenging, taking 3-4 days and passing through diverse ecosystems from montane forest to alpine desert.
What makes Mount Meru special is the wildlife. Armed rangers accompany climbers through the lower slopes due to the presence of buffalo, elephants, and other large mammals. You might spot giraffes, warthogs, and colobus monkeys as you ascend through lush forest.
The summit, Socialist Peak, offers one of Tanzania's most spectacular viewpoints. On clear mornings, Kilimanjaro rises magnificently to the east, while to the west you can see across the Rift Valley. Many climbers use Meru as acclimatization before tackling Kilimanjaro, but it deserves recognition as a remarkable climb in its own right.

Best Time to Climb
Mount Meru can be climbed year-round, but conditions vary by season.
June to February (Dry Seasons): Best climbing conditions with clear skies and minimal rain. June-October is the main season. December-February offers excellent visibility. Expect more climbers during these months, though still far fewer than Kilimanjaro.
March to May (Long Rains): Heavy afternoon rains make trails muddy and slippery. Summit views often obscured by clouds. However, the mountain is lush and green, wildlife is abundant, and you'll have the trails nearly to yourself.
November (Short Rains): Brief rains but often clear mornings. Good compromise for those seeking solitude with reasonable conditions.
