About Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve (now part of Nyerere National Park) is Africa's largest protected wildlife reserve, covering over 50,000 square kilometers in southern Tanzania. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a true wilderness experience away from the crowds.

The reserve is famous for its diverse landscapes—from dense woodlands and open grasslands to rocky outcrops and river systems. The mighty Rufiji River, Tanzania's largest, flows through the reserve, creating unique boat safari opportunities.

Best Time to Visit

June to October (Dry Season): The best time to visit Selous with excellent wildlife viewing as animals concentrate around water sources. Boat safaris on the Rufiji River are spectacular during this period. Pleasant temperatures and minimal rainfall.

January to March: Another good period with hot weather and great game viewing. The landscape is drier, making wildlife easier to spot. Perfect for photography with dramatic skies.

April, May, November (Green Season): Lower visitor numbers and lush landscapes. Some camps close during heavy rains (April-May), but November offers excellent value with beautiful scenery and good wildlife viewing.
