About Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive, intact volcanic caldera, formed when a giant volcano exploded and collapsed on itself 2-3 million years ago. The crater floor covers 260 square kilometers and is home to approximately 25,000 large animals.

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the crater is often called "Africa's Garden of Eden" due to its stunning beauty and incredible biodiversity. The unique ecosystem supports a year-round population of wildlife, including the endangered black rhinoceros.

The crater's varied habitats—grasslands, swamps, forests, and a soda lake—support diverse wildlife including lions, elephants, buffalo, hippos, flamingos, and over 500 bird species. The steep crater walls create a natural enclosure, keeping most animals within the crater year-round.

For visitors, the crater offers one of the most concentrated wildlife viewing experiences in Africa, with the possibility of seeing the Big Five in a single day safari.

Best Time to Visit

Ngorongoro Crater can be visited year-round, making it one of Tanzania's most reliable wildlife destinations. However, different seasons offer unique experiences.

June to October (Dry Season): Excellent wildlife viewing with minimal vegetation. Animals concentrate around water sources, making them easier to spot. Clear skies provide perfect conditions for photography.

November to May (Green Season): The crater transforms into a lush paradise with fewer tourists. Newborn animals appear, and migratory birds arrive. Morning mist creates dramatic atmospheric conditions.
